About Mangrove Coast Fly Fishers
Mangrove Coast Fly Fishers is a local fly fishing club established in 1992 to advance the knowledge and enjoyment of saltwater fly fishing in both local and distant waters, and to provide a forum for beginner and novice fly fishers to expand their knowledge and experience. We promote fly-fishing for our spouses and children, and we introduce fishermen and non-fishermen alike to the sport of fly casting and fly tying. The club became a Charter chapter of The Federation of Fly Fishers (FFF) in 2005.
We meet monthly to hear, and see, of new fishing locations world wide, learn new casting techniques, hear of environmental and fishing law enforcement issues, learn on site about Snook breeding programs, see fly tying demonstrations, and generally just have a good time talking about fishing with other fishermen. We have occasional fishing outings, and inter club fishing trips, and one annual fund raising banquet.
Our dues at work:
Coastal Conservation Association of Florida – Spring tournament
CCA has been very effective in lobbying to reduce the legal limits on many of our game fish. They have been very instrumental promoting legislation to reduce the size of nets and in some cases, to ban netting altogether. In short, they are protecting the interests of the sport fisherman. Annually MCFF sponsors the fly of the CCA spring fishing tournament at a cost of $500. Many of our members participate and enjoy the tournament.
Coastal Conservation Association of Florida – Fall tournament
MCFF and CCA run a fun tournament in the fall. It’s strictly fly and we split the proceeds. The club usually realizes a $300 to $500 profit. It takes a little work but we have the usual willing volunteers.
Federation of Fly Fishers
MCFF is a charter club member of FFF. As such, our club enjoys tax exempt status and an opportunity to purchase insurance through them. We support their efforts in environmental protection, legislation, and education, casting and fishing instruction as well as the catch and release program. Members receive their magazine twice yearly.
MCFF Scholarship Program – Due to other priorities, the scholarship program has been suspended until further notice. The objective of the program is to provide support to students who plan to preserve and improve the quality of the marine environment so that we and future generations can continue to enjoy the sport we love. It is our way of giving something back to the community. Each year three area high school graduates are selected by Rick Smith, a member of the board of directors, to be considered for the MCFF scholarship grant. The students must be planning to include studies in marine or natural sciences in college and have maintained a high grade point average in high school. The club then sends $500 to their college of choice for inclusion in their living fund. The club typically budgets $1,500 per year for the scholarship program. Due to other priorities, the scholarship program has been suspended until further notice.
